Spotlight: BeHerVillage

One thing that I was sure about during my first pregnancy was that I needed to surround myself with support. I’d worked with enough families to know the difference support can make during pregnancy, birth, and afterward. I knew the difference between a midwife, doula, and lactation counselor. I also knew that I’d rely on all three. I’d prioritize their support over a brand new stroller any day.

I was privileged to have this understanding, and the ability to access this support. My husband and I also benefitted from a robust support system of family members and friends we could lean on. My job did not give me paid leave, but I was not at risk of losing it. (Though I would have lost my health insurance had I taken more than 12 weeks away).

My husband and I paid for my doula and lactation counselor with the help of our parents. We paid for our birthing classes and midwives ourselves. We put together a fairly minimal baby registry, and picked up most big items used. Our registry was mostly what you’d expect: blankets, onesies, tiny socks, baby wash, etc. Our families and friends pitched in to purchase things and help us out. It was sweet to have a sense that they were with us in a way as we wrapped our baby in gifted swaddles and outfits.

A year ago I met Kailtin McGreyes at a picnic hosted by her company BeHerVillage, Birth Smarter, and Baby Caravan. I knew right away I wanted to get to know her and stay in touch. BeHerVillage is a gift registry for support, not stuff. BeHerVillage helps parents access funds to pay for doulas, lactation support, maternity leave, pelvic floor care, midwifery care, and other types of support that is often not covered by insurance and out of reach for so many people. It effectively marries two of the most important forms of support that I am so thankful I had access to: community and experts.

Becoming a BeHerVillage partner was a no brainer for me.

If you are expecting a baby or know someone who is, you can create a registry and tag me here. My classes and consultations are available for purchase through the registry and make a fantastic gift for new or expectant families.
